Tuesday night cat blogging

Didn’t I promise occasional cat-blogging on this thing? Hoagie has fallen head over heels in love with a pair of clogs that Amber bought on the Internet, and spends an inordinate amount of time lying on top of them and rubbing her face against them, as shown here. She also occasionally attempts to cram her entire head inside one of the shoes, but she usually realizes how ludicrous this looks and stops before I have time to grab a camera.

She is the only cat I’ve ever owned who is at all sentimental about objects — she loves her toys and will drag them all over the house, and, back when Amber’s hair was long enough to require hair-scrunchies, would occasionally grab those off the dresser and stash them in odd places. This is the first time she’s ever gotten hot and heavy with a pair of shoes, though. I presume the previous owner treated them with catnip oil for some reason.

Yay, kitty! Almost as cute as Josh!

My friend’s cat is absolutely obsessed with my shoes. It doesn’t matter what pair I’m wearing she will bother me ’til I take them off and then make sweet, sweet love to them. She’ll even fight off the other cat if it looks to be homing in on my shoes and he’s an old tomcat who can kick her ass up one side of the curb and down the other.

She’s a little tetched, but she’s my shoe baby!

I don’t know what it is with cats and shoes. All my cats have been crazy about them (well, all my cats have been crazy, anyway). My present cat thinks they are the most exciting objects EVAR. Except carrots.

    Seriously cute kitty.

My older kitty hunts a toy down then howls over it. Usually at 1 am or 5 am.

Awww…. I love me a stripey tabby! Cuteness, Josh!

When she was quite young, my diminutive little grey kitty once paraded in with most of a loaf of bread–the heavy stuff, like Orowheat–carrying it by the scruff of its neck. It looked like she was hauling a pretend kitten, not so much like she was hauling prey.

Both my cats wait for us to take off our shoes and writhe on them. Literally. It took us a while to figure out with the first cat we had (neither my husband or I had ever had cats), but it makes sense that cats would be obsessed with shoes.

You walk in them all day, and so they pick up all sorts of smells inside and out: owner’s feet, the stuff they stepped on… and whatnot. More importantly, every time the shoes leave, the scent of the cat gets wiped out. And at least with our cats, they’re all about marking their humans. Whenever we come home from wherever we go, at least one cat will basically weave him or herself between our legs, smearing their scent glands on us.

My cat Boris is especially ridiculous with this, as he’s done this even if I’ve been out of the door and back in under 5 minutes. He’s also (of the two) the cat who won’t even politely wait for you to take your shoes off before plopping on them and… well, you know what kind of stuff they do…

Also speaking of kittens hauling stuff much bigger than them, when aforementioned cat was a wee kitten, we’d always play with a feather wand, and if he caught the feathers at the end, sometimes I would drop the wand down after her caught it, which he interpreted as “having killed the bird”. He’d carry off the whole thing by himself, almost proudly parading around the house. The wand part of it was quite heavy, so you’d see him pulling with his mouth with all his might, trying to look dignified but failing. It was the funniest, most endearing sight ever, and we miss it now that he’s decided he’s a big cat and must not act too excited about his “kills”.

My dog likes to sniff people’s feet and then goes over to the shoe pile and sniffs all the shoes. It’s like she’s trying to play match-up or something.

I worry that she’s making fashion judgments on me.

Cat blogging is so 2003. Good thing that is such a cute kitty.

My cat’s were big fans of hair ties to the point where my ex- and I used to call them ‘hair toys’ instead of ties. It might be lame. . .but as long as you’re throwin’ a picture in there I’m down with a cat blog or two every now and again!

Oh my God I had a cat that was always weirdly affectionate with various things in my house, especially this one pair of shoes I owned, and a low coffee-table-ish thing we had in the living room. My roommate and I would, of course, coo and shriek over how totally adorable it was. One day I was in my bedroom with the door open so I could see into the living room; I could see the cat, but he wasn’t aware of me, and he wasn’t really doing anything. He looked out the window, he napped, he ate. This went on for about an hour, and then I got up, and he became aware of me, and suddenly, he was all about rubbing up again the table and my shoes, purring and being crazy. I started to wonder if he only did so because he knew it would get a reaction/petting out of me.

My cat is like that! Especially strings. And a beat up cereal box that must be about 4 years old by now.

Are the clogs used? If so, the previous owner might’ve had a cat, and Hoagie might be able to smell them.

    Very cute!

Careful with those hair scrunchies! Back when I had long hair, my cat “Murphy’s Law”, aka Murphle, swallowed a dime, two pennies and a ponytail holder. Some hair stuck to the holder wrapped around the coins, creating a lump that she could not pass and could not vomit — surgery ended up costing $832.12 (though technically I got 12 cents back, for a net of $832 even). Murphle is healthy and happy today, and I have short hair and keep my change away from her.

Hambone likes to sleep with his head in one of my Dansko clogs. He also enjoys spooning my suede Merrell mocs. He has tried to pull the clogs off my feet. Apparently they are his–he just lets me wear them once in a while….
